It is important to remember that fashion is meant to be a tool to inspire you to create your own individual look rather than to set rigid boundaries for you to work within.
To me, looking stylish is all about dressing for your body shape… always. Don't fall in to the trap of sacrificing dressing to suit your shape for high fashion. There are so many trends out there to choose from these days, so make sure that you select the ones that best suit you.
Here are a few tips on how to look fashionably fabulous this season and dress for your body shape:
1. The return of the jacket
The jacket and suit have made a strong comeback; but we are not talking about the power suit of the '80s, except for the shoulder padded look. This season's suit style is structured but with feminine detail, for example a classic fitted jacket and trousers worn with a chiffon frilly blouse. Jackets come in a variety of fabrics and styles from the tuxedo jacket in velvet to the boyfriend jacket in tweed.
How to wear it:
Structured styles suit most shapes. The key is to find the right shape and length of jacket for your shape. Often women wear their jackets too long in attempt to cover their behind, but this actually makes it look bigger! Rather wear wide-leg trousers or skirts with a cropped, fitted jacket ending above your widest point. The wide-leg will disguise hips, bums and thighs while allowing you to go shorter in jacket length. Alternatively, wear a bootleg trouser for balance and a jacket ending just below your behind or in a fit and flair style ending just above your knee. The shoulder pad can be a great way for women with classic pear shapes to balance their hips. However, if you have broad shoulders, avoid these like the plague!
2. Country plaid
This look has been with us for a while and continues into this season. The country look features tweeds, leggings, hats, chunky knits, riding boots and plaid style fabrics.
How to wear it:
This look can get messy if you wear too many of these items at once. Select a piece or two to give the look some structure. Be aware of chunky knits as they can make your shape look "chunkier" than it is. Rather select a chunky knit scarf and or hat to pull off this look while looking fabulously fashionable. Be aware of the "tucking your trousers into your riding boots" look unless you are tall and slim. If you are short and slim, wear the same colour trousers and boots to give an illusion of longer legs. If you have generous hips, this look will emphasise your hips.
3. Glam rock:
The '80s has returned! It's over-the-top bling in bright metallic shades of bold gold and shiny silver. Sequins are huge, whether they're used for trim details, an entire dress or accessories. Colours are bold and bright: purple, pink, red, green and blue are all in this season. Accessories are bold and chunky. Prints are big in large geometric shapes or animal prints.
How to wear it:
My philosophy is don't repeat an era; so if the '80s was your youth era, don't try to repeat it today in the same way. You can still add fashion accents to your wardrobe; just avoid wearing the look in its entirety! For example select a classic jacket style that suits your shape and has sequin detail on the collar and cuff for a wardrobe update. If this is the first time you have worn the 80's look, have fun with it, but always remember to make sure it suits your shape.
4. Inside out:
This look is very feminine, wearing lingerie type garments on the outside i.e. lace corsets, soft chiffon blouses, pussy-bow blouses and lots of rouging in soft flesh tone colours of blush, beige and ivory.
How to wear it:
While it is true that more and more women want to express their femininity these days, the idea of wearing lingerie type garments during the day may send you reeling. Don't worry, there are ways of doing this without looking like you forgot to get dressed in the morning! Wear a feminine lace or chiffon frilly blouse under a jacket or fitted waistcoat is great example. It will feminise your look without going over the top. Mixing the feminine with the masculine is a very fashionable look this season too.
5. Chanel look:
This is inspired by the movie "Coco Avant Chanel", about the famous fashion designer Coco Chanel. This is a very classic look, combining the masculine suit with feminine touches with utmost style. The simple black dress that Jackie O is so well known for and the masculine looking black trousers worn with an ivory chiffon blouse and a string of pearls are a couple of the well known looks associated with this designer.
How to wear it:
Many of the tips I've given you above will apply to this look. The key is to find a good fit in classic style made with quality fabrics. This look is uncluttered and simple, but with well thought out detail. Keep it simple or take the aspects of this look which you like and add details that will make it your own.
I hope this gives you some inspiration to create a look that is uniquely yours.
